Momentum (organisation)

Momentum is a British left-wing political organisation. Founded in 2015 by Jon Lansman four weeks after Jeremy Corbyn's successful campaign for the Labour Party leadership, it has been described as a grassroots movement supportive of Corbyn and the Labour Party.〔 , it has roughly 60,000 supporters.〔
==Background==
Momentum in some respects resembles the Movement for Change, another grassroots network set up by David Miliband in 2011 to much fanfare.〔 Momentum describes itself as "a network of people and organisations that will continue the energy and enthusiasm of Jeremy's campaign",〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://www.peoplesmomentum.com/ )〕 and campaigns on local issues and on topics within the Labour Party.〔 The organisation states that it aims to organise local groups across the country to "encourage mass mobilisation for a more democratic, equal and decent society" and "assist members in making their voice heard in Labour Party debates".〔 The organisation's founders say it has been registered as a limited company on an interim basis and has a devolved democratic structure, run on a voluntary basis with no plans to charge membership fees.〔
Some hard left and far left groups like the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition,〔 Left Unity, the Socialist Workers Party (SWP), the Socialist Party and the Alliance for Workers' Liberty have attempted to affiliate themselves with the organisation, thus causing concern among the soft left of the Labour Party.〔 However, others on the far left have criticised the group strongly, for example the International Committee of the Fourth International.
The idea, coupled with alleged entryism from Trotskyist organisations, was denounced by soft left critics of the leader within the Labour Party as part of an attempt to mobilise factionally, leading to the deselection of more centrist MPs and councillors "who are not judged politically correct by the veteran Bennite organisers behind Momentum". Labour MP and former shadow minister Emma Reynolds has described Momentum as "a parallel organisation to the Labour Party" (something which the organisation denies) and likened them to the Militant tendency, saying that "What is it they are seeking to do? Who is going to be involved? Are there going to be members of the SWP or Trotskyite, Stalinist parties involved? And there is a suspicion they are really about de-selecting MPs and forcing MPs out of our party."〔 The group has denied that it intends to campaign for deselections, with spokesman James Schneider arguing "The purpose of Momentum is not to have internal factional battles, it's to look outside."〔
Momentum has stated that it will resist entryism by the SWP and other groups; however, several Momentum organisers also hold paid roles for other far left political parties campaigning against Labour, including a former Green Party spokesperson and Member of European Parliament (MEP) and several revolutionary Marxist organisations, according to Andrew Gilligan in ''The Daily Telegraph''.
